Not to mention the supervisory blurbs throughout, the personnel officer narrative, and what you did for the copier sales experience. Good show I have attached what I can remember and what similar locations I have found online for the AE supervisory position and PR Account Coordinator position. Hopefully, you can work your magic on those as wellDate Hired June 2013Jobseeker Type Military to FederalPrevious Job Title Retail Sales AssociateTarget Job Title Support Services Supervisor, GS-0342-07Agency Department of Agriculture, Forest ServiceResult Best Qualified, Referred, and Hired Within Two MonthsWriter/Coach Diane BryantStrategy /Process Client had been out of the military since 1999 and working in sales or customer service ever since. He was interested in pursuing a Federal career and based on his military experience was interested in jobs in human resources.The first step in our process was the consultation. It became readily apparent during the consultation that the clients military experience was extensive not only in personnel administration but also in general administration, logistics, and resource management. For that reason, we built his resume identifying and focusing on KSAs common to these career fields. The process included extensively fleshing out his experience, which we accomplished by him providing additional job information in response to specific KSA-related questions that I asked. We also used the classification standards for these occupations to identify keywords to include throughout his resume.The result was a resume that clearly brought out his experience and competencies in terms o f the KSAs common to the career fields of human resources, administration, logistics, and resource management. Although we normally do not go back mora than ten years in a resume, in this case we made an exception in order to highlight his military experience. We also re-described his civilian sales and customer experience in terms of those same KSAs. The announcement for this job closed in March and the client was selected with a report date in June.

How to Get Your Resume Noticed Think Above the Fold

How to Get Your Resume Noticed Think Above the FoldHow to Get Your Resume NoticedHow to Get Your Resume Noticed Think Above the FoldWhats the most important part of your resume? Take it from a former newspaper editor Page one, above the fold.Thats how a resume is like the front page of a newspaper, and one of several reasons why writing a resume comes easily to me.What does above the fold mean? Heres a comparisonTHE NEWSPAPER The top half of the front page. In other words, what a passerby sees while walking by a newsstand. If it contains something interesting, hell buy a copy.THE RESUME The top half of the first page. If the hiring manager likes whats there, it compels him to read more.The comparison illustrates the impact of making a good first impression on your resume. If the details above the fold dont catch the readers interest, the rest doesnt really matter.You make that first impression when you spell out the value you can offer the employer in a section of your resume labeled Summary, Professional Summary, or Summary of Qualifications.Or, if you really think like a newspaper editor, you can replace that with a headline that describes your value, such asQuota-Smashing Sales Pro for a ausverkauf professional who has consistently surpassed sales goals, -or-Certified Project Management Professional for a project manager who wants to play up a critical certification.Heres an example of what above the fold might look like in a resumeYOUR NAMEYour address and/or phone number, email address,and the URL for a social networking profileQuota-Smashing Sales ProHighly experienced sales professional with strong, consistent track record of success in the manufacturing industry. Exceeded quarterly sales quotas 90 percent of the time, earning four written commendations from two CEOs. Helped boost revenue 10 percent a year over the past 5 years by aggressively wooing new customers from top competitors. Proven ability to advocate for customers individual needs to help ens ure repeat business and higher share of wallet.If Im a sales manager in a manufacturing firm and I need someone to help increase revenue and plektron up new customers, Id at least be interested in reading more about this candidate, specifically the accomplishments that support this statement.To boost your chance of being called for an interview, pique the hiring managers interest by taking the above the fold approach State what you can do and how youve done it, which can give the hiring manager plenty of reasons to read the rest of your resume and a clear picture of what you offer an employer.

How You Can Deal With a Condescending Boss

How You Can Deal With a Condescending BossHow You Can Deal With a Condescending BossA reader asks this question about a boss who belittles zu sich performance. She says, My boss told me off for not doing a task like I welches a child. I was really shocked and stated the task was on my to-do list, however, I got bogged down doing something else. I have just started the job but she does not show me how to do things. When I say I dont know how to do a task she says, ask other staff questions. I said, I do but they dont show me, and I think she shares what she does with another manager, as when I walk into a room there is an atmosphere. One good thing, though I really get on with the clients and they always ask for my help. Heres What to Consider About a Boss Who Is Condescending Honestly, this question is hard to answer without knowing both of you personally. Itswrong and unprofessional of your bossto tell you off like youre a child. But, then again, generally its wrong to treat a c hild rudely (which is what the assumption is about what happened here). There are a whole bunch of things going on in your reporting relationship with your boss. First, you feel like youre unfairly picked on, have not received training, and that youre not receiving the support that you feel you need from your boss. She feels like you need your hand held and you dont prioritize your work. There is no way to know which one of you is in the right. It may well be that you are completely fabulous and shes a horrible manager. On the other hand, you may be a nightmare of neediness and shes tried every management trick in the book before she finally lost her composure and chewed you out. The truth about the reporting relationship is probably somewhere in the middle. You learn best when someone demonstrates how to do a task. She and the other staff dont have time to do these demonstrations. It seems like amanagement style clash. She prefers employees who figure things out on their own. You p refer a more hands-on approach from your manager. Neither one is bad. They are just different approaches to managing and reporting. Recommended Actions to Address the Problem of a Condescending Boss So, what can you do about this? You have a number of options when it comes to dealing with a condescending boss. Try these Get over the lecture. Your boss behaved inappropriately when she condescendingly belittled you. Its not illegal, though, and since you wrote told me off and not tells me off it sounds like a one-time situation. Every boss and every employee make mistakes from time to time. Its probably best toconsider this as a one time mistakeand to let it go and move on. Ask your boss for a formal sit-down meeting. The formal nature of this request makes it more serious. If you grab your boss in the hallway and say, Hey, Jane, I need more guidance, it wont change your situation. If you have regular one on one meetings, this is something to bring up in the meeting. If you dont h ave regular meetings (bad), then ask for a formal meeting. In this meeting say, Im unclear on how I can prioritize my workload. I want to make sure Im doing the most important tasks first. Listen to what your boss has to say. If she gives you vague responses like, Do the most important things first. then you need to push further for better direction. You need to phrase your questions from an I point of view. Try one of the following statements and questions to start. Can I have 15 minutes of your time on Friday afternoons to go over and prioritize my tasks for the next week?Im having trouble figuring the most important task to focus my time on. Can you give me some insight into your goals for the department?Sometimes I get too focused on details and miss the big picture. Can you recommend atraining classthat will help me learn to see the overall priorities? Notice that what youre not doing is saying, You never showed me how to do that. Even if its true, managers dont respond well to you statements like that- and shell feel like youre attacking her. This wont improve your situation and may make it worse. Follow up with your boss who you believe is condescending. While managers should be responsible for following up, in a situation like this where she values independence and you value guidance, youll have to be the one who does the following up. If you can get her to help you prioritize your work according to what she wants (which may or may not be logical), then youll be able to pull off the follow-ups. But, until youre confidently able to predict what she thinks is the most important task to accomplish, youll need to double check. Stand up to your condescending boss. This is not advice to confront your boss. This is advice to stand up for yourself. If she starts to belittle you condescendingly again say, Jane. I apologize for my error. That statement might stop her in her tracks. If it doesnt, then you can add to it, Ive apologized for my error. Can you please lower your voice? and then the third step is to stand up and walk away. The last step takes a lot of guts and, honestly, it may end poorly. You need to prepare for the potential negative consequences. If your manager is truly a horrible person who loves to yell, this wont go over well. But, if shes generally a good person who occasionally loses her temper, this will cut the condescension off. Youll have to judge that based on your further treatment. The key issue in handling any confrontation like this is admitting your own weaknesses and approaching the conflict from a position of what can I learn to do better? rather than you (the boss) need to change what youre doing. Youll experience much more success when you make issues about something that you can control.

The best (and worst) states to begin a start-up

The best (and worst) states to begin a start-up The best (and worst) states to begin a start-up Start-ups are cool. You can learn a lot working at a start-up given that â€" you know â€" it’s a start-up and everyone is figuring out what works on the fly (this is also a metaphor for life).However, if you have a brilliant idea that the world needs to see, and you’re thinking about starting up a start-up, it’s best to know where to start up a start-up before you close down before you even start up.Phew.Lucky for you, we’ve already done the research. Welcome to the point of this study.Today, we’re looking at the best states to start up a start-up. And that was my last use of alliteration, I promise.These are the 10 best states in America to open a start-up: Massachusetts California Colorado Washington New York Utah Virginia Maryland Oregon Texas Well, well, well Silicon Valley actually isn’t the best place to be in the start-up world after all.Why?Let’s dive a little deeper into the data.Summary of findings Massachusetts is the best state for start-ups â€" each establishment received an average of $2.5 million to begin operations California, home to the aforementioned Silicon Valley, comes in at second on the list â€" the state still had the most deals for start-ups at 586 Colorado, Washington, and New York round out the top five states Mississippi  ranks as the worst state to begin a start-up Wyoming,  South Dakota, Montana, and  Alaska  round out the bottom five How we did itFor this study, we created an index using data from  PricewaterhouseCoopers’  Q2 2018 MoneyTree Report  and  The Kauffman Index.Each state was ranked across four categories involving start-ups: The state’s Kauffman Index Overall deals for start-ups Deals for start-ups per-capita The amount start-ups were funded per-capita The Kauffman Index separates states by larger and smaller distinctions, then ranks each state 1 to 25 based on their rate of startup growth.The other three figures are self-explanatory, but all come from PwC’s data.Amount per-capita comes from dividing the total amount of money funded for start-ups by the state’s population.Deals per-capita comes from dividing the total number of deals by the state’s population.Note that  Louisiana, West Virginia, and  Oklahoma, along with the bottom five states, had no deals or funding available in the data.Wrapping upOverall, PwC’s report states that a record $23 billion was invested across 1,416 deals nationwide during Q2.So there’s no time like the present to grab a patent for your game-changing idea of sunglasses for dogs and get to shakin’ and movin’.Now, let’s check out where each state ranks:This article first appeared on Zippia.

These 10 Skills Will Drastically Improve Your Chances of Being Hired in 2018

These 10 Skills Will Drastically Improve Your Chances of Being Hired in 2018 These 10 Skills Will Drastically Improve Your Chances of Being Hired in 2018 The job market is constantly evolving. In today ’ s tech-driven and social media-hungry landscape, businesses have a new set of criteria for what skills should be found on the perfect resume . It ’ s no longer enough to only have competence in your primary field of expertise. Employers want to hire informed candidates who have the skills needed to handle all the unexpected curveballs that might be thrown their way. Fortunately, if you have (or decide to acquire) these highly sought-after skills , you can set yourself apart from other candidates in today ’ s new job market. With that in mind, here are 10 of the most sought-after skills that hiring managers are loving right now. The business world is becoming more globalized than ever. Companies that choose to restrict themselves to the United States will simply lose out to competitors that are willing to expand into other continents like Asia and Europe. Because of this, many firms specifically tell recruiters to find job applicants who know a foreign language. That way, they ’ ll have employees who are capable of communicating with clients who might feel more comfortable with their native language. Studies show that e-commerce is growing 23% year after year, and 8 out of 10 consumers now shop online. If businesses don ’ t have a website by now, they ’ ll be on the lookout to get one. Having an employee with some basic web development skills such as HTML, CSS, and WordPress can be extremely useful to a company ’ s e-commerce efforts. This is particularly the case for smaller businesses that don ’ t have a separate team of web developers dedicated to building and maintaining the company website. We live in a data-driven world . Whether it ’ s a real estate agency or a mutual fund or an online marketing firm, every business has an ever-increasing amount of facts and statistics at its disposal. The companies that are going to succeed in today ’ s era of big data are the ones that will be able to organize, understand, and utilize this information to the utmost effectiveness. Even if your industry might not seem particularly data-oriented just yet, businesses are always thinking ahead and planning for the future. So with this in mind, if you have some statistics know-how or machine learning chops, make sure to highlight this on your resume! Everyone has a smartphone these days, and mobile devices are playing an increasingly important role in our lives. Businesses are all rushing to create mobile-friendly versions of their applications and websites, and they need people to help them do it. Whether you ’ re a mobile UI guru or an iOS development whiz, your skills and expertise will be in high demand for a long time to come. Cloud computing has been at the cutting edge of technology for a couple years now, and it’s still as hot as ever! At its core, cloud computing creates a sharable pool of computing resources online, and businesses are drawn to the flexibility, scalability, and low costs that this engenders. Even if you ’ re not a hardcore SaaS programming ninja, having some experience with Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform, or Microsoft Azure can make you a much more attractive job candidate to a lot of firms out there. Nowadays, company marketing campaigns and outreach strategies are all about harnessing social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat. Showing that you understand the language of social media isn ’ t just a useful skill to have, but a necessity in this day and age. Of course, depending on the position you ’ re apply for, adding a link to your Pinterest account on your resume might not make the most sense, but you should at least point out your LinkedIn profile so employers can see that you ’ re not completely in the dark about social media. Automation has become a big trend. Businesses have realized that automating their processes as much as possible will play a key role in creating an efficient business model that scales cost-effectively. Hiring managers often have a preference for job applicants with some knowledge of C++, Python, or another programming language, even if the job doesn ’ t necessarily involve coding directly. The ability to program also hints to companies that you are a logical thinker and good problem solver. Businesses and industries are transforming more rapidly than ever before. On top of that, companies have been adopting far looser organizational structures than they used to. Employees are now given a wide range of responsibilities, and they are being delegated tasks that aren ’ t necessarily within the realm of their primary areas of expertise. Both of these trends have caused companies to put a heavy emphasis on not just what job candidates know now, but how quickly they can pick up fresh ideas and skills . If possible, try to show an example of when you once learned and made use of a new skill while on the job. That way, hiring managers can tell you ’ re a quick study. Gone are the days when your boss would give you a solo assignment that had you sitting in a cubical by yourself until you finished the job. The new consensus is that working in teams and collaborating with others is the best way to get things done. Make sure to provide examples showing how you ’ ve worked on group projects in the past. This way companies know that you ’ d be a great team player if hired. Now more than ever, the most important skills to have on your resume are simply the skills mentioned in the description of the job you ’ re applying for. Obviously the listed skills are the most applicable, and so recruiters will naturally be looking for those when going through your resume. However, on top of that, more and more companies are integrating applicant tracking systems into their hiring processes to make first round cuts. These computer applications automatically sift through all of the resumes received for a job posting to see which ones might be a good fit, so include the right skills on your resume to make sure you ’ re not screened out right off the bat. Tips for Putting Self-Care at the Top of Your Career Search

Tips for Putting Self-Care at the Top of Your Career Search Tips for Putting Self-Care at the Top of Your Career Search As you mentally and physically prepare for your career search, remember to put self-care at the top of your list. Yes, you are your first priority! Self-care is more important than your resume, and “working” your LinkedIn network. “Why is that?” you may be thinking. Read my explanation below. The job search is not one for the faint of heart The job search is an arduous process for most. To get to the finish line of your job seeking marathon, you must have the stamina, along with a clear mind, and a relaxed body. Indulging in your creative passions, or discovering some new ones, will also help you shine during your job interviews. Your self-care and creative life matter and can help you land the opportunity you’re seeking. Here’s how to practice self-care and improve your odds with your career search The advice below will set you on a career path that is both rewarding and good for your health. Move your body Make time to go for a walk, a bike ride, to an exercise class, or dance. Exercise releases the “feel good” chemicals, Endorphins. Not only is it healthy for you, it will go a long way in keeping your “smile” on. Eat healthy Stay well-hydrated. Consume less processed sugar and eat at least three balanced meals with plenty of veggies and fruit. Eating a healthier diet will keep you energized for the long haul. Rest when you get the chance Take a few moments whenever you can to get up from your computer and stretch. Consider taking a nap. A study in 2009 by UCSD and the VA San Diego Healthcare System showed that napping enhances creativity and can assist with problem-solving. Give yourself breaks from technology. Meditate or just close your eyes for a few moments and sit still. This will nourish you so you can keep going. Practice sleep hygiene A 2013 Mayo Clinic study showed that the bright light emitted by SmartPhones and tablets can disrupt sleep-wake cycles. The study suggests turning off your devices at least one hour before bedtime. The World Health Organization recommends eight hours of sleep a night for peak performance. Sleeping well during your diligent work search can help you make smarter decisions and feel more alert. Make time for creative play To stay more relaxed, make time to play. Sit down with foam board, magazines, scissors, and a glue stick to create a vision board of your ideal work situation and have fun while creating this. You may prefer to dabble with a sketch pad, colored pencils, crayons, paints or maybe you want to make shapes with play dough or clay. Try not to get hung up on the end resultâ€"just be willing to explore and enjoy the experience. A 2017 study in the Art Therapy Journal mentioned that spending 45 minutes in visual art activities significantly reduces the stress hormone, Cortisol, so it’s even great for your health. Remember your career search is a marathon, not a sprint. Focusing on your self-care can elevate your energy and mood to go the distance to reach success.

A Business Owner, a Dyslexic, and a Scientist Need to Hire #8230;

A Business Owner, a Dyslexic, and a Scientist Need to Hire #8230; A Business Owner, a Dyslexic, and a Scientist Need to Hire #8230; A business owner, a dyslexic, and a scientist need to hire the best talent available â€"  that sounds like the beginning of a bad joke, right? To me its no joke at all. I am dyslexic. It turns out that about 15-20 percent of the general population,  35 percent of entrepreneurs, and many scientists and engineers  are dyslexic, so Im not alone. I am currently an entrepreneur/business owner, and previously, I was a research scientist. So maybe I should say I am all three â€" a dyslexic, scientist entrepreneur. For me, and maybe for you too, resumes are a nightmare, a cacophony of disorganized, time-consuming information. The Problem With Resumes For the dyslexic me, when there is a lot of input â€" whether its auditory or visual; text, colors, people, movement, music, or any combination of these â€" its hard to figure out what is important. I can and do figure it out, but it probably takes me more time than it takes you. Multiple or disorganized inputs feel overwhelming, and combined with increased processing time, it all causes me to feel  stupid â€" a label Ive struggled against most of my life. Reading resumes makes me feel stupid. They are time-consuming and difficult tools for me to use when the goal is to identify useful comparative information about people. Reviewing resumes makes me feel frustrated, and when I feel frustrated, I feel stupid, helpless, and angry â€" all of which drive me to practice task avoidance. I bet that the task of resume reading might make you practice task avoidance, too, even if youre not dyslexic. While each individual resume seems organized, clear, and complete, no two resumes are alike. We all believe that no two people are alike, so it might seem reasonable that my resume (or yours, or any candidates resume) is unique. But to my dyslexic brain, a pile of resumes is a pile of  noisy documents with randomly placed (buried) critical information. To be an effective dyslexic business owner, I want decision-critical information filtered so that it is manageable and highlights the key things that are most important. I prefer an oral report, a table, or a graph any day over three pages of text or a huge spreadsheet. (Thats the scientist in me talking.) When it comes to hiring decisions, I want the same information about each person presented in the same way and in the same place on the page. And  I want different information from candidates, depending on the job title being considered. Lastly, I want to be sure that every candidate who applies has a fair chance and knows what I care about when Im hiring. Heres my challenge to you: Compare any two resumes you might have tucked away in a folder somewhere. Use the resumes to figure out how many years of experience each candidate has doing a specific job, or executing a specific type of work, or fulfilling a key responsibility, or even doing a single key skill. Pick something that you care about for determining the quality of prospective candidates. Now find the same exact information in another resume, and then another. How long did it take to find what you were looking for? Was it productive and enjoyable work? Now consider repeating this for 10 or 20 or more applicants. How Technology Can Help By now, youre probably saying, Ill just use the search function to find resumes that contain a few keywords. Sounds like a good solution, but how does the candidate know which keywords are the the ones I care about? Additionally, Im still stuck reading all the resumes that were returned in the search. Finally, candidates get wise to this practice and load their resumes with keywords, making the documents even more time-consuming to read. What we need are tools  that are  imagined and invented to clearly present the information that employers  care about most when hiring for specific employment opportunities. Managers, owners, and HR professionals know what skills, experience, and work behaviors are crucial to on-the-job success. Technology should  empower the employer to ask every candidate who is applying for a given position the same specific questions the employer cares about. This technology should also  present candidate information (their answers to the questions you asked) in the same way, in the same place, and in a searchable format. You wont have to spend your valuable time hunting through resumes to find the information you know is crucial. If you can list the key skills, experiences, and behaviors, you should be able to  craft the right questions to ask your candidates, and the right search tools should help you quickly identify those candidates who have the key qualifications. Lastly, you should be  sure that every candidate has a fair chance to provide the key information, raising the confidence level of your  sorting and screening processes. Whether youre a dyslexic business owner or a busy entrepreneur, a busy manager, or a busy HR professional, its time to kill the resume and join the revolution to rationalize and streamline the recruiting process. â€" About the Author: Leora Baumgarten is vice president at NewHire.  Leora is an expert when it comes to hiring and recruiting for SMBs. Recommit to Your Career Resolution. Heres How.

Recommit to Your Career Resolution. Here's How. Recommit to Your Career Resolution. Here's How. Learn how to stick to your New Year’s resolution to change your career this year.If you’re like many people out there, you may have already lost sight of the New Year’s resolutions you declared at the beginning of January. If your career resolutions have been usurped by work deadlines and children’s play dates, it’s time to recommit to your goals. Use these tips to get your job search back on track.Write out your planWhether your goal is to get promoted or change careers entirely, do the legwork before jumping into action. A goal without a plan won’t get you far. When you take the time to think through your goals, you make it a lot easier to set the right strategy. Write down your goal and include the reasons why you want to achieve it. Also answer these questions on paper: If you were to successfully complete this goal, how would your life be different? What would happen? By simply writing down your goal and forming a plan, you are more likely to achieve it.Set milestone sThe job search can be incredibly overwhelming. To keep yourself motivated, create smaller milestones to strive for each and every week. For instance, you might give yourself a deadline to update your resume or complete an online course. Hold yourself accountable to certain tasks each week, such as applying to well-fitted opportunities or conducting informational interviews. As you accomplish these mini-goals, give yourself a little reward. Consider small ways to pamper yourself like an evening out with friends or something as simple as a luxurious bubble bath.Create a contractIt’s easier to hold yourself accountable when you share your goals with others. There a number of ways you can involve your loved ones â€" or even strangers â€" to help you stay on track. For instance, create a contract that states your goals and what you’re prepared to do to achieve them. You can also share your goals through one of your social networks (dedicated to personal use) and update your connecti ons once a week on your progress. If you’re looking for a different type of incentive, consider commitment contract sites like stickK.com where you agree to donate money to a charity you oppose, should you derail from your plans.Gather supportersThere are a number of face-to-face and virtual associations out there to not only boost your career goals, but also provide a different kind of support you might not find in your office or at home. Consider joining a professional organization such as National Association of Professional Women (NAPW), Step Up Women’s Network (SUWN) or a group that’s geared specifically for job-search so you have a larger support group.There are going to be times when life gets in the way of your plans. And that’s okay. The most important thing to do is not give up when you hit a roadblock. Take a step back, reevaluate your plan, and make adjustments if necessary. Don’t let one hiccup â€" or three â€" stop you from achieving your goals.

12 Early Career Success Tips from Booz Allen Hamiltons CFO

12 Early Career Success Tips from Booz Allen Hamilton's CFO 12 Early Career Success Tips from Booz Allen Hamilton's CFO Booz Allen Chief Financial Officer Lloyd Howell Jr. recently held a roundtable in Midtown Manhattan with college students participating in the Business Today 44th International Conference. During the event he offered the following career advice for those entering the workforce: Develop Your Critical Thinking Skills.   As an employer, I look for critical thinking skills , judgment, and decision making. Much of what we deal with is anything but structured. The ability to look at a complex problem from many angles and then make a decision based on judgment and experience is an important skill. I learned it from a mentor, from working alongside a very successful executive, and asking questions. Booz Allen is a learning organization. We emphasize development and training. That leads to the ability to constantly learn new crafts, new areas, how to help new clients. People who are drawn to consulting often can’t quite figure out exactly what they want to do at first. Continuous learning gives you the opportunity and platform to try different things. I always enjoy learning something new, and that inquisitiveness has certainly helped me in my career. Be positive, principled, proactive, and productive. Work gravitates to those who enter the workforce with a positive disposition. People gravitate to them, they’re invited onto engagements, and to be involved. These are people who raise their hand often, who are team-oriented. It comes across powerfully. Appreciate that you are still learning about yourself. Early in my career, all I knew for certain was that I wanted to be an engineer, so I majored in electrical engineering. I had no idea what came next. I was either going into investment banking, consulting, or working in a traditional engineering capacity as an R&D analyst. I decided based upon the recommendation of a good friend. That’s how I got into Booz Allen. Being open to the most random advice and ideas will help you learn about yourself. I like to joke that I don’t remember much academically from either undergrad or graduate classes, but I remember everything socially- the connections I made with classmates, professors, and friends in the cities where my schools were. They are probably the biggest contributors to my success, the people I met and the relationships I’ve had for many years. It’s important to leverage coworkers and colleagues , to offer them help and ask them for help when you’ve got too much on your plate. In academics, I’ve seen the emergence of a lot of group projects, which is terrific. It’s a perfect mirror of what happens in the workforce. I’ve been super impressed with the younger generations in our workforce . They are extremely respectful and helpful- It’s so important. It contributes to you being seen in a positive light, and people wanting to work with you and for you. All of that starts with respect. Patience is something I lack, but my advice is to be patient. Everyone wants it yesterday, but it doesn’t work that way. With patience, it more times than not will happen when it is supposed to happen. Things need to happen in their own time due to a variety of reasons. But Don’t  Be Patient About Planning Your Career.   Everyone should have a career plan , and we should all be impatient in thinking through it and getting feedback. If you say you want to be president tomorrow, well that’s probably not realistic. There are probably some things you need to do in order to get there. But be aggressive in putting that plan together and getting feedback. Once you get into your plan, things happen. There might be any number of life events that cause your two-year timeline to stretch to three. Be patient  with that. Learn from it. It will make you a better professional, a better person.
