Benioff said that by quickly responding to e-mail, you show your customers that you care about them and value their time. If youre a job candidate, think of yourself as a brand and recruiters and human-resources executives as your customers. Consider the image you want to project. If you cant respond to their e-mails or correspondence in a timely manner, why should they expect you to be responsive to the needs of their clients or customers?Embrace social media. For Benioff, the future of communicating with customers rests in engaging with them through every possible channel phone, e-mail, chat, Web and social networks. Customers are discussing a companys products and brand in real time. Companies need to join the conversation. How to Write a One-Sheet for Your New AlbumHow to Write a One-Sheet for Your New AlbumA one-sheet is what a distributor uses to sell a release to record stores. One-sheets are similar to doppel-lp press releases in that they tell information that sells the album, but they also must include additional information that a store needs to know before deciding to buy an album for their shop, like the dealer price they will have to pay and the formats of the release. Sometimes music distributors will write one-sheets themselves, but in most cases, the label will be the one to open the one-sheets, and the distributor will then tweak it as necessary. Getting the one sheet right is important after all, this is your chance to tell record shops why they should be selling your album to their customer. This template will help you put together a one-sheet that does the job. First, a few basic points to keep in mind One-sheets are called one-sheets for a reason theyre supposed to be one page long. K eep it clear and concise. Remember, shops have tons of unterstellung to read.Your one-sheet can be essentially the same as your album press release, with a few little changes. The Header Think of the header as the quick reference section of your sales sheet. Here, you should include Label NameArtist NameRelease NameFormats of the Release (CD, vinyl, etc)Catalog Number(s)Release DateDealer PriceContact Information - Label Contacts and/or Distributor Contacts Your header may also contain your label logo somewhere, or you may choose to have the logo above the header, in one of the upper corners of the page. If the album has a major selling point, such as it features a well-known artist on a track or was produced by someone well known, you can include that info in a tagline in the header to grab attention. It helps to set the header off from the rest of the one sheet by boxing it, bolding the text, italicizing the text or any combination of these methods. Paragraph One The first paragraph should include the most important information about the release. It should have enough basic information in it that someone could read it and know enough about the release to sell it. If this is bedrngnis the first release by the artist, use this first paragraph to remind the readers of past achievements, or if this is a debut release, give a brief introduction to the band. Remember that you have to keep one-sheets short, so if you feel that you cant tell everything about the band that you need to here, consider a separate band bio. After introducing the artist, give some facts about the album that would be useful to the shop in selling it. These points will vary from release to release, of course, but they may include facts about who is featured on the album, where it was recorded, famous fans of the band and so forth. You should also give a description of the music comparisons to other musicians are usually the most useful. Paragraph Two This paragraph is where you have the space to expand on some of the points you introduced in paragraph one. What you need to flush out here in your one-sheet depends on the release. For a new band, you might want to use this space for extra biographical information. For a group with a few releases under their belt, you might want to talk about a successful tour they had or a single from one of their last albums that did well. Paragraph Three In this final paragraph, include information about how the album will be promoted. If you are hiring PR, state that here. Mention any upcoming tours planned to support the album or any major press pieces you know are in the works. Record stores need to know this information so they know that youll be working to sell the album, and the more promotion you can show that you have planned, the more copies theyre likely to stock. Closing In closing, include links to your labels website, the artists website and any other relevant promotional sites someone in the store mig ht be interested in seeing to learn more. You can also include again a contact at the label for information and/or a contact at the distributor. Like the header, setting this information apart in some way is helpful.

False Statements on Recruiting PaperworkFalse Statements on Recruiting PaperworkGetting into the military can be difficult, especially when the needs of the military are low (no war to fight) or the economy is poor and more people stream into the recruiting station looking for work. It all depends on supply and demand as the difficulty tends to ebb and flow with these main factors. For the most part, recruiters are hardworking, honest professionals. They know the regulations and the enlistment requirements of their service, and they work hard to legally process recruits for enlistment. Recruiting is a difficult job, and recruiters who do their jobs well, and legally have my utmost respect. Military Recruiting Truth Unfortunately, there are some recruiters out there who are encouraging (and, in some cases, downright instructing) recruits to lie about their criminal or medical history. Here are four common examples of situations that occur An applicant claims his recruiter told him to lie about his childhood asthma. The recruit does so and is accepted. A week before graduating boot camp, he falls ill with a breathing problem. The medical officials diagnose it as asthma, and the troop is placed in a holding status for several weeks while the military locates and obtains previous civilian medical records. The records are located and showa childhood diagnosis of asthma. The recruit is given an administrative discharge for fraudulent entry, with a Reenlistment Eligibility (RE) code of 4 (he can never enlist again). His fraudulent entry discharge will follow him for the rest of his life. The sad part is, that history of childhood asthma is often waivered today, if disclosed, and a pulmonary function test shows no evidence of current breathing problems. A recruit had a felony conviction, as a juvenile, but the records were sealed. The recruiter performed a local criminal hintergrund check and it came back clean. The recruiter instructed the recruit to lie at MEPs, and the recruit welches enlisted in the Delayed Enlistment Program. Months later, the recruit returned to MEPs to process for shipment to basic training. He welches informed at that time that the FBI criminal background investigation discovered the juvenile felony conviction. He was discharged from the DEP, and can never enlist again (had he reported this originally, a waiver could have been granted). An Air Force recruit was arrested as a juvenile, and the record was later expunged. A lawyer and his recruiter told him that he didnt have to report the arrest. The recruiter did a check with the local law enforcement agencies and found no record of the arrest. Based on the advice of the recruiter and the lawyer, the recruit did not disclose the arrest on his enlistment documents. During the final week of basic training, he was removed from his flight and processed for a discharge for fraudulent entry. A record of the arrest was found when conducting his security clearance background i nvestigation. (The military requires that you report *ALL* arrests, regardless of the final outcome). Based on his recruiters advice, a Navy recruit did not report knee surgery he had undergone at the age of 14. The surgery was such that it would have required a waiver to join. The recruit had selected a rating (job) that only required a SECRET Security Clearance, so his recruiter askoranversd him that there was no way that the Navy would ever check his civilian medical recordsunless he possibly re-injured his knee at a later time. The recruiter was mistaken. While in A-School (job training school), the recruit was tentatively selected for an assignment that would have required a TOP SECRET Clearance. As part of the initial assignment screening process. the DSS (Defense Security Service) began a detailed background investigation. When performing interviews, an acquaintance of the recruit happened to mention the time that the recruit spent in a hospital. The investigator noticed that there was no mention of hospitalization on the recruits initial enlistment paperwork, so he sought and located the hospital records. The recruit received a fraudulent enlistment discharge. Each of these individuals wanted to know if they could somehow have their discharges upgraded. The sad answer is, probably not. The law allows a military discharge to be upgraded only in extremely limited cases. Lying to Get Into the Military is a Felony Knowingly giving false information or withholding required information on any recruiting form is a criminal offense (When the information would have made an individual ineligible to enlist, or would have required a waiver to enlist). Its not a misdemeanor, its not the same as getting a speeding ticket. Its a felony offense, punishable by a $10,000 fine and three years in prison. If you lie to get into the military, you are committing a felony. Its that simple. If you get away with it long enough to actually enlistand are caught later, its al so a military offense. You can be prosecuted for a violation of Article 83 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), which states Any person who (1) procures his own enlistment or appointment in the armed forces by knowingly false representation or deliberate concealment as to his qualifications for that enlistment or appointment and receives pay or allowances thereunder or(2) procures his own separation from the armed forces by knowingly false representation or deliberate concealment as to his eligibility for that separation shall be punished as a court-martial may direct. The Manual for Courts-martial (MCM) lists the maximum punishment for a violation of this article as dishonorable discharge, reduction to the lowest enlisted rank, forfeiture of all pay and allowances, and confinement at hard labor for two years. Read The Contract The Enlistment Contract (DD Form 4/1) cant make this any more plain. Paragraph 13a of the contract (signed by the recruit) states 13a. My ac ceptance for enlistment is based on the information I have given in my application for enlistment. If any of that information is false or incorrect, this enlistment may be voided or terminated administratively by the Government, or I may be tried by Federal, civilian, or military court, and, if found guilty, may be punished. A recruiter who encourages you to lie has violated his/her own service regulations and can be prosecuted for violation of a regulation under Article 92 of the UCMJ. Additionally, if the recruiter knows you are not qualified for military service, under the regulations, and processes your enlistment anyway, that recruiter can be charged with a violation of Article 84 of the UCMJ. However, when you get caught in your lies, if you think that dishonest recruiter (the one who told you to lie) is going to stand up and say, Yes, I told him to lie, its all my fault, then youd better get your head examined. He/she is going to say, Nope. He/she didnt tell me a thing about it You are the one who is going to suffer the consequences of your choice to commit a felony. The Recruiter VS. MEPS MEPS job is the same as the recruiters job. It is not the recruiters job to get you into the military, nor is it MEPS job to disqualify you. For both, its to ensure that only qualified candidates enlist. The criminal background check and security clearance investigations can and do find sealed records. If anyone tells you otherwise, they are lying to you. If you get sick while in the military, and the medical professionals suspect it is a preexisting condition, the military will make every effort to track down previous civilian medical records. Again, if someone tells you that the military never checks into these matters, then they are not telling you the truth. If you lie about your previous drug use (even if there is no criminal record), and your military job/assignment (either now or a future assignment) requires a Top Secret clearance, the military CAN find o ut about it (see Security Clearance Secrets). Individual recruiters are not authorized or qualified to make medical or legal determinations. Each of the services has a waiver process whereby senior recruiting and medical officials can waive certain disqualifying medical or moral (legal) factors, depending upon the current needs of the service and the other qualifications of the applicant. MEPs can sometimes be very fussy when it comes to determining qualifications. If, for example, you say to your recruiter I might have had asthma as a kid, but no doctor ever diagnosed it as asthma, then the recruiter is perfectly correct to instruct you that the correct answer to the question Have you ever been diagnosed with asthma? is no. One should read the questions carefully, and answer them truthfully, but its never a good idea to offer more information than what is actually asked. Why Do Some Recruiters Encourage You to Lie? Recruiters are required to make mission (or face consequences t o their career), and making mission is often beyond their control. This system of making mission sometimes forces some recruiters to break the rules (damned if they do, damned if they dont). This does not justify this, but it helps explain why it happens. This may help you understand more about the overall military recruiting situation and hopefully prevent you from over-generalizing based on your own bad experience. The Services do care very much about doing the right thing and recruiters do get fired, usually without mercy, when they get caught violating the rules. When a recruiter was relieved of their duties it usually involved a thorough investigation and depending on the situation, it often was accompanied by some form of punishment. In some cases, a discharge from the service. Needless to say, most punishments are career-ending. Now, on top of that, being fired from recruiting duty because you didnt make your quotas, is also usually career ending. Recruiters often feel like they are between a rock and a hard place because they usually are. So your observation about the effect of the pressure tempting people to do whatever it takes to make their quota is not far off target. The MEPS is independent from each Service, and is not on any quota. Many recruiters view the MEPS as the enemy, as an obstacle to recruiting. Consequently, some tend to coach their applicants on how to answer the medical questions. Yes, its wrong, but MEPS folks are pretty good about recognizing it. The reason quotas are such a big deal, besides the fact that the military needs so many bodies to do the work, Congress mandates that each Service be at a certain number (end strength) at the end of the year. That number is tied to the budget and the money they get to operate. If they fall too far below that number because they miss their annual recruiting goals, Congress could reduce the size of the Service and the dollars that go with it. My point is, those recruiting quotas really are do-or-die numbers, even though they still have to be made legally and ethically. What to Do if Youre Told to Lie So, what should you do if your recruiter encourages you to commit a crime by lying? Well, thats up to you. You can listen to the recruiter and take your chances. You can tell him/her No and stick to your guns. You can request or find a different recruiter. Or, you can help stop this unlawful practice by making an official complaint. Understand that making an official complaint may not result in prosecution of the recruiter (it depends upon how much evidence there is), but it will darn sure make sure that the recruiters supervisors are aware that something wrong might be going on. Thats the only way they can correct a problem situation (or a problem recruiter). If you can somehow locate the address or phone number of the recruiters immediate commander, thats the best place to make your complaint. She says, My boss told me off for not doing a task like I welches a child. I was really shocked and stated the task was on my to-do list, however, I got bogged down doing something else. I have just started the job but she does not show me how to do things. When I say I dont know how to do a task she says, ask other staff questions. I said, I do but they dont show me, and I think she shares what she does with another manager, as when I walk into a room there is an atmosphere. One good thing, though I really get on with the clients and they always ask for my help. Heres What to Consider About a Boss Who Is Condescending Honestly, this question is hard to answer without knowing both of you personally. Itswrong and unprofessional of your bossto tell you off like youre a child. But, then again, generally its wrong to treat a c hild rudely (which is what the assumption is about what happened here). There are a whole bunch of things going on in your reporting relationship with your boss. First, you feel like youre unfairly picked on, have not received training, and that youre not receiving the support that you feel you need from your boss. She feels like you need your hand held and you dont prioritize your work. There is no way to know which one of you is in the right. It may well be that you are completely fabulous and shes a horrible manager. On the other hand, you may be a nightmare of neediness and shes tried every management trick in the book before she finally lost her composure and chewed you out. The truth about the reporting relationship is probably somewhere in the middle. You learn best when someone demonstrates how to do a task. She and the other staff dont have time to do these demonstrations. It seems like amanagement style clash. She prefers employees who figure things out on their own. You p refer a more hands-on approach from your manager. Neither one is bad. They are just different approaches to managing and reporting. Recommended Actions to Address the Problem of a Condescending Boss So, what can you do about this? You have a number of options when it comes to dealing with a condescending boss. Try these Get over the lecture. Your boss behaved inappropriately when she condescendingly belittled you. Its not illegal, though, and since you wrote told me off and not tells me off it sounds like a one-time situation. Every boss and every employee make mistakes from time to time. Its probably best toconsider this as a one time mistakeand to let it go and move on. Ask your boss for a formal sit-down meeting. The formal nature of this request makes it more serious. If you grab your boss in the hallway and say, Hey, Jane, I need more guidance, it wont change your situation. If you have regular one on one meetings, this is something to bring up in the meeting. If you dont h ave regular meetings (bad), then ask for a formal meeting. In this meeting say, Im unclear on how I can prioritize my workload. I want to make sure Im doing the most important tasks first. Listen to what your boss has to say. If she gives you vague responses like, Do the most important things first. then you need to push further for better direction. You need to phrase your questions from an I point of view. Try one of the following statements and questions to start. Can I have 15 minutes of your time on Friday afternoons to go over and prioritize my tasks for the next week?Im having trouble figuring the most important task to focus my time on. Can you give me some insight into your goals for the department?Sometimes I get too focused on details and miss the big picture. Can you recommend atraining classthat will help me learn to see the overall priorities? Notice that what youre not doing is saying, You never showed me how to do that. Even if its true, managers dont respond well to you statements like that- and shell feel like youre attacking her. This wont improve your situation and may make it worse. Follow up with your boss who you believe is condescending. While managers should be responsible for following up, in a situation like this where she values independence and you value guidance, youll have to be the one who does the following up. If you can get her to help you prioritize your work according to what she wants (which may or may not be logical), then youll be able to pull off the follow-ups. But, until youre confidently able to predict what she thinks is the most important task to accomplish, youll need to double check. Stand up to your condescending boss. This is not advice to confront your boss. This is advice to stand up for yourself. If she starts to belittle you condescendingly again say, Jane. I apologize for my error. That statement might stop her in her tracks. If it doesnt, then you can add to it, Ive apologized for my error. Can you please lower your voice? and then the third step is to stand up and walk away. The last step takes a lot of guts and, honestly, it may end poorly. You need to prepare for the potential negative consequences. If your manager is truly a horrible person who loves to yell, this wont go over well. But, if shes generally a good person who occasionally loses her temper, this will cut the condescension off. Youll have to judge that based on your further treatment. The key issue in handling any confrontation like this is admitting your own weaknesses and approaching the conflict from a position of what can I learn to do better? rather than you (the boss) need to change what youre doing. Youll experience much more success when you make issues about something that you can control.

To get to the finish line of your job seeking marathon, you must have the stamina, along with a clear mind, and a relaxed body. Indulging in your creative passions, or discovering some new ones, will also help you shine during your job interviews. Your self-care and creative life matter and can help you land the opportunity you’re seeking. Here’s how to practice self-care and improve your odds with your career search The advice below will set you on a career path that is both rewarding and good for your health. Move your body Make time to go for a walk, a bike ride, to an exercise class, or dance. Exercise releases the “feel good” chemicals, Endorphins. Not only is it healthy for you, it will go a long way in keeping your “smile” on. Eat healthy Stay well-hydrated. A Business Owner, a Dyslexic, and a Scientist Need to Hire #8230; A Business Owner, a Dyslexic, and a Scientist Need to Hire #8230; A business owner, a dyslexic, and a scientist need to hire the best talent available â€"  that sounds like the beginning of a bad joke, right? To me its no joke at all. I am dyslexic. It turns out that about 15-20 percent of the general population,  35 percent of entrepreneurs, and many scientists and engineers  are dyslexic, so Im not alone. I am currently an entrepreneur/business owner, and previously, I was a research scientist. So maybe I should say I am all three â€" a dyslexic, scientist entrepreneur. For me, and maybe for you too, resumes are a nightmare, a cacophony of disorganized, time-consuming information. The Problem With Resumes For the dyslexic me, when there is a lot of input â€" whether its auditory or visual; text, colors, people, movement, music, or any combination of these â€" its hard to figure out what is important. I can and do figure it out, but it probably takes me more time than it takes you. Multiple or disorganized inputs feel overwhelming, and combined with increased processing time, it all causes me to feel  stupid â€" a label Ive struggled against most of my life. Reading resumes makes me feel stupid. They are time-consuming and difficult tools for me to use when the goal is to identify useful comparative information about people. Reviewing resumes makes me feel frustrated, and when I feel frustrated, I feel stupid, helpless, and angry â€" all of which drive me to practice task avoidance. I bet that the task of resume reading might make you practice task avoidance, too, even if youre not dyslexic. While each individual resume seems organized, clear, and complete, no two resumes are alike. We all believe that no two people are alike, so it might seem reasonable that my resume (or yours, or any candidates resume) is unique. But to my dyslexic brain, a pile of resumes is a pile of  noisy documents with randomly placed (buried) critical information. To be an effective dyslexic business owner, I want decision-critical information filtered so that it is manageable and highlights the key things that are most important. I prefer an oral report, a table, or a graph any day over three pages of text or a huge spreadsheet. (Thats the scientist in me talking.) When it comes to hiring decisions, I want the same information about each person presented in the same way and in the same place on the page. And  I want different information from candidates, depending on the job title being considered. Lastly, I want to be sure that every candidate who applies has a fair chance and knows what I care about when Im hiring. Heres my challenge to you: Compare any two resumes you might have tucked away in a folder somewhere. Use the resumes to figure out how many years of experience each candidate has doing a specific job, or executing a specific type of work, or fulfilling a key responsibility, or even doing a single key skill. Pick something that you care about for determining the quality of prospective candidates. Now find the same exact information in another resume, and then another. How long did it take to find what you were looking for? Was it productive and enjoyable work? Now consider repeating this for 10 or 20 or more applicants. How Technology Can Help By now, youre probably saying, Ill just use the search function to find resumes that contain a few keywords. Sounds like a good solution, but how does the candidate know which keywords are the the ones I care about? Additionally, Im still stuck reading all the resumes that were returned in the search. Finally, candidates get wise to this practice and load their resumes with keywords, making the documents even more time-consuming to read. What we need are tools  that are  imagined and invented to clearly present the information that employers  care about most when hiring for specific employment opportunities. Managers, owners, and HR professionals know what skills, experience, and work behaviors are crucial to on-the-job success. Technology should  empower the employer to ask every candidate who is applying for a given position the same specific questions the employer cares about. This technology should also  present candidate information (their answers to the questions you asked) in the same way, in the same place, and in a searchable format. You wont have to spend your valuable time hunting through resumes to find the information you know is crucial. If you can list the key skills, experiences, and behaviors, you should be able to  craft the right questions to ask your candidates, and the right search tools should help you quickly identify those candidates who have the key qualifications. Lastly, you should be  sure that every candidate has a fair chance to provide the key information, raising the confidence level of your  sorting and screening processes. During the event he offered the following career advice for those entering the workforce: Develop Your Critical Thinking Skills.   As an employer, I look for critical thinking skills , judgment, and decision making. Much of what we deal with is anything but structured. The ability to look at a complex problem from many angles and then make a decision based on judgment and experience is an important skill. I learned it from a mentor, from working alongside a very successful executive, and asking questions. Booz Allen is a learning organization. We emphasize development and training. That leads to the ability to constantly learn new crafts, new areas, how to help new clients. People who are drawn to consulting often can’t quite figure out exactly what they want to do at first. Continuous learning gives you the opportunity and platform to try different things. I always enjoy learning something new, and that inquisitiveness has certainly helped me in my career. Be positive, principled, proactive, and productive. Work gravitates to those who enter the workforce with a positive disposition. People gravitate to them, they’re invited onto engagements, and to be involved. These are people who raise their hand often, who are team-oriented. It comes across powerfully. Appreciate that you are still learning about yourself. Early in my career, all I knew for certain was that I wanted to be an engineer, so I majored in electrical engineering. I had no idea what came next. I was either going into investment banking, consulting, or working in a traditional engineering capacity as an R&D analyst. I decided based upon the recommendation of a good friend. That’s how I got into Booz Allen. Being open to the most random advice and ideas will help you learn about yourself. I like to joke that I don’t remember much academically from either undergrad or graduate classes, but I remember everything socially- the connections I made with classmates, professors, and friends in the cities where my schools were. They are probably the biggest contributors to my success, the people I met and the relationships I’ve had for many years. It’s important to leverage coworkers and colleagues , to offer them help and ask them for help when you’ve got too much on your plate. In academics, I’ve seen the emergence of a lot of group projects, which is terrific. It’s a perfect mirror of what happens in the workforce. I’ve been super impressed with the younger generations in our workforce . They are extremely respectful and helpful- It’s so important. It contributes to you being seen in a positive light, and people wanting to work with you and for you. All of that starts with respect. Patience is something I lack, but my advice is to be patient. Everyone wants it yesterday, but it doesn’t work that way. With patience, it more times than not will happen when it is supposed to happen. Things need to happen in their own time due to a variety of reasons. But Don’t  Be Patient About Planning Your Career.   Everyone should have a career plan , and we should all be impatient in thinking through it and getting feedback. If you say you want to be president tomorrow, well that’s probably not realistic. There are probably some things you need to do in order to get there. But be aggressive in putting that plan together and getting feedback. Once you get into your plan, things happen. There might be any number of life events that cause your two-year timeline to stretch to three. Be patient  with that. Learn from it. It will make you a better professional, a better person.
